Here’s what to expect during construction, and how to handle the mess and upheaval during the process.
- Prepare mentally and emotionally. Any type of construction project, whether big or small, gets messy; a process that can leave you feeling stressed and worried about the outcome. Take plenty of time to visit with your design team and contractor to craft your design before starting construction and increase your confidence about the finished product.
- Establish a project timeline and schedule. Discuss the timeline and plan in advance with your contractor. The general contractor coordinates all the people and elements vital to the project and ensure everything is completed in a timely manner. Every project is a team effort between the contractor, designer, and customer.
- Take steps to control dust. There’s virtually no way to eliminate dust at a construction site. During the remodeling project, plan to dust frequently and seal off work areas with plastic sheeting, if possible.
- Design a temporary kitchen and plan to eat out. Plan to move the refrigerator, microwave, coffee maker, and a few other often-used appliances into another room. And remember, paper plates are a great thing!
